Thailand's civil aviation system has received a significant upgrade. Aeronautical Radio of Thailand (AEROTHAI, known in Thai as "บวท.") recently announced that new direct flight route L770 (reporting point NAN-SAGAG), jointly developed by Thailand, China and Laos, officially entered operation on September 3, 2026, providing a smoother and more efficient air corridor for aircraft traveling between the two countries. According to an earlier report by Nation Thailand, the route is the latest outcome of years of negotiations over a "parallel route" between China and Thailand, marking another key step in Thailand's push to modernize its airspace and pursue its ambition of becoming a world-class aviation hub. The launch comes at a time when people-to-people travel between China and Thailand is rebounding quickly and demand for air transport keeps climbing, drawing close attention from both the aviation and tourism industries in Thailand and China.
According to AEROTHAI, the newly opened L770 route shortens flight distances by between 27.5 and 35.2 nautical miles compared with the previous routing. While the mileage saved on a single flight may appear modest, the China-Thailand corridor carries dense and frequent traffic, so the cumulative fuel and time savings over the long run are expected to be considerable. Previously, flights between China and Thailand relied mainly on a single corridor designated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), passing through a reporting point called SAGAG in southwestern Lao airspace — located at the boundary of the China and Laos Flight Information Regions (FIR) and associated with the existing routes A581 and B218 — which had long faced near-saturated traffic, with flights at times queuing, being rerouted or delayed. The new route effectively adds a parallel corridor alongside the existing one, giving air traffic controllers and airlines more scheduling options, helping to divert traffic pressure, reduce the risk of congestion in the skies, and improve the overall safety margin of airspace operations.
In fact, Thailand, China and Laos began discussions on opening a new route back in 2024, when the three sides recognized that as the China-Thailand aviation market kept expanding, annual traffic volume in the relevant airspace could rise from roughly 100,000 flights at the time to around 200,000, a level the existing single route would struggle to sustain. The civil aviation authorities of the three countries subsequently held repeated rounds of coordination on technical arrangements, airspace design and safety standards, and jointly submitted a proposal for the new route to ICAO. The plan was originally set to launch in early 2026, but was pushed back to allow more time for technical validation, flight-procedure design and trilateral coordination, before ultimately entering service on September 3 — a preparation process that spanned more than two years in total.
From an industry perspective, the direct benefits of the route adjustment include shorter flight times, reduced fuel consumption, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and reduced overall operating costs for airlines — efficiency gains that carry real significance for carriers currently grappling with high fuel prices and cost pressures. Industry observers say the move is also seen as one of Thailand's key supporting measures for handling rapidly rebounding flight demand from the Chinese market. According to Thai data, China is currently the country with the highest number of flights linked to Thailand, with cumulative flights reaching approximately 777,000 — the highest of any country or region — underscoring just how central the China-Thailand aviation market is within Thailand's overall civil aviation landscape.
Notably, the launch of L770 is not an isolated event but part of AEROTHAI's broader "airspace digitalization" program. The agency recently unveiled six priority projects covering the integration of weather radar systems, the construction of digital and remote air traffic control towers, the rollout of next-generation aviation information systems, and a range of sustainability initiatives, aiming to raise both the infrastructure and the technological capacity of Thai airspace operations in tandem. Under the plan, these upgrades are meant to support an estimated 919,600 flights in Thai airspace during the 2026 fiscal year, with a further medium-term target of raising annual flight volume to one million by 2027 (Buddhist Era 2570) — laying the infrastructure groundwork for Thailand's ambition to build a regional and world-class aviation hub.
On the tourism front, the launch of the new route coincides with Thailand's major push to attract Chinese visitors. Thai tourism authorities project around 5.1 million Chinese tourist arrivals for the full year 2026, up 14% from the previous year; figures as of August 5 showed arrivals for the year had already surpassed 3.14 million, pointing to a solid recovery momentum and steady progress toward the annual target. At the same time, seat capacity on the China-Thailand air network has grown 8.7% this year to about 8.47 million seats, matching rising demand for travel between the two countries. Analysts say the gains in route efficiency and the expansion of flight capacity reinforce one another, together providing a firmer air-transport foundation for tourism and business exchange between China and Thailand.
Thai authorities also indicated plans to further develop parallel routes linking northern Thai cities such as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai with major Chinese cities including Kunming, Guiyang, Chengdu (Tianfu), Chongqing and Xi'an, aiming to build a more resilient China-Thailand air corridor network on top of the existing single corridor. In addition, as land routes such as the China-Laos Railway and the Kunming-Bangkok Expressway continue to be developed, cooperation among China, Thailand and Laos on transport connectivity is no longer confined to a single mode, but is now advancing simultaneously across rail, road and air.
