China and Thailand's air forces will hold the "Falcon Strike 2026" joint military exercise on Thai soil this month — the ninth iteration of the training program since it began — extending close defense cooperation between the two countries.
According to China's Ministry of National Defense, the exercise will focus on air defense operations alongside humanitarian assistance and disaster relief drills, with China deploying a range of aircraft and ground-based air defense units to train alongside their Thai counterparts.
The drills follow Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's official visit to China from July 16 to 20, during which he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two sides issued a joint statement on building a "China-Thailand community with a shared future," agreed to launch a "2+2" foreign and defense ministers' dialogue, and signed five agreements on future industry cooperation.
Both sides also affirmed the value of their mutual visa-exemption arrangement for ordinary passport holders, saying it has meaningfully eased travel between the two countries and driven a rise in people-to-people exchanges.
Since it began, the Falcon Strike series has become a regular fixture of China-Thailand air force exchanges, with its scope expanding over successive editions from basic air combat training toward air defense, joint command, and non-traditional security cooperation such as disaster response.
Analysts say this month's joint exercise reflects a deepening of the traditional friendship and practical cooperation between the two nations, and represents a concrete step toward implementing the defense-cooperation understandings reached in July's joint statement.
