Chinese students have become the largest single group among Thailand's international school population in recent years, with industry surveys showing they now account for more than half of all international students nationwide — and as much as 50% at some schools in Chiang Mai.
The trend has accelerated sharply since 2022. Analysts attribute the shift to Chinese parents increasingly seeking to move their children away from the country's highly competitive education system, where some children as young as eight face homework routines lasting until midnight, pushing families to look overseas for basic education alternatives.
Annual tuition at Thai international schools typically ranges from 88,000 to 185,000 RMB — a fraction of comparable schools in Singapore or Hong Kong, where similarly positioned schools often charge several times as much. That cost gap is a major reason Thailand's international education market has grown steadily more attractive to middle-class Chinese families in recent years.
Beyond international schools, Thailand has also been expanding broader international education partnerships: the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation is offering a total of 211 government-scholarship programs for international students across Thai universities for the 2026 academic year, reflecting a wider expansion of Thailand's international education market that extends well beyond primary and secondary schools.
Industry observers caution, however, that quality varies widely between schools, the tax implications of parent-guardian visas can add hidden costs, and some schools' staffing and facilities have not fully kept pace with rapid enrollment growth — making it worth families' while to visit in person and research thoroughly before choosing a school.
As the share of Chinese students keeps climbing, a number of international schools have begun adjusting their curricula accordingly — strengthening Mandarin-language instruction and Chinese-culture content, for instance — to better serve this fast-growing segment of their student body.
