Thailand's meteorological department warns of heavy rain and flash floods, Aug 6-9

Thailand's Meteorological Department has warned of widespread rain across the North and upper Northeast from August 2 to 10, with heavy rain in some areas raising the risk of flash floods and swollen streams.
A monsoon trough is expected to shift southward from August 6 to 8, then strengthen from August 7 to 9 under the influence of Typhoon Dolphin, which will by then be moving east of China. The upper North, upper Northeast, East, and the South's west coast are expected to see the most significant impact, with as many as 20 provinces placed under flash-flood warnings.
Thailand's rainy season typically runs from July through October, with June to August usually bringing relatively cleaner air but a concentrated risk of rain-driven flash flooding; the department has issued several similar warnings for low-lying areas in the North and Northeast earlier this year, and this system represents one of the more significant rain events of the monsoon season so far.
The department has also advised ships in the Gulf of Thailand and Andaman Sea to remain ashore from August 3 to 9, with small boats in the upper Andaman Sea told to stay in port from August 6 to 9.
Local authorities and disaster-prevention agencies have begun checking flood-prone spots and mountain drainage systems, urging residents near waterways and in low-lying areas to prepare to move belongings and to keep monitoring further updates from the meteorological department.
Analysts note that as extreme rainfall events grow more frequent amid a changing climate, the state of Thailand's flood infrastructure investment and early-warning response in recent years will be a direct factor in how much actual damage events like this one end up causing.
