Nearly Two Centuries Strong: Overseas Chinese Media Visit Shenyang's Dadong Grocery Market

On September 21, the 2026 'Chasing the Chinese Dream, Discovering Liaoning' delegation visited Shenyang's Dadong Grocery Market, a time-honored store under the Shenyang Grocery Group that has evolved over nearly two centuries. Its roots trace back to the 'Xiaodongmen Vegetable Market' of 1829, later passing through the 'Dongguan Vegetable Market' era and a public-private partnership before being formally named 'Dadong Grocery Store' in 1958 and taking its current name in 1984 — making it Shenyang's oldest comprehensive grocery market.
The market spans 5,500 square meters, with its supermarket section carrying more than 5,000 kinds of goods, alongside over 90 leased stalls offering more than 900 specialty products — a full range that comfortably meets local residents' daily shopping needs.
Over the years, Dadong Grocery Market has held firmly to its role as the 'people's vegetable basket and the government's price anchor,' consistently working to stabilize prices, ensure supply, and serve residents' livelihoods — a genuine expression of a state-owned enterprise's social responsibility. Backed by solid management, the market has earned more than a dozen national- and provincial-level honors, including a National May Day Award and recognition as a national model store free of counterfeit goods; in 2025 it was named a 'Liaoning Worker Pioneer,' while staff member Xu Jingxia received the 'Liaoning May Day Medal,' her example helping drive continuous improvement in service quality.
Through decades of change, Dadong Grocery Market has preserved the everyday texture of old Shenyang while continuously reinventing itself. Today it stands as a livelihood anchor trusted by local residents and a growing draw for visitors from out of town — a century-old name writing a fresh chapter even as it carries its history forward.
